Summary

The bestselling author of UnSelfie explains why the old markers of accomplishment (grades, test scores) are no longer reliable predictors of success in the 21st century -- and offers 7 teachable traits that will safeguard our kids for the future。

Michele Borba has been a teacher, educational consultant, and parent for 40 years -- and she's never been more worried than she is about this current generation of kids。 The high-achieving students she talks with every day are more accomplished, better educated, and more privileged than ever before。 They're also more stressed, unhappier, and struggling with anxiety, depression, and burnout at younger and younger ages -- we're like pretty packages with nothing inside, said one young teen。

Thrivers are different: they flourish in our fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world。 Why? Dr。 Borba combed scientific studies on resilience, spoke to dozens of researchers/experts in the field and interviewed more than 100 young people from all walks of life, and she found something surprising: the difference between those who struggle and those who succeed comes down not to grades or test scores, but to seven character traits that set Thrivers apart (and set them up for happiness and greater accomplishment later in life)。

These traits--confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism--will allow kids to roll with the punches and succeed in life。 And the even better news: these traits can be taught to children at any age。。。in fact, parents and educations must do so。 In Thrivers, Dr。 Borba offers practical, actionable ways to develop these traits in children from preschool through high school, showing how to teach kids how to cope today so they can thrive tomorrow。

'Forty rules of love' written by Elif shafak a french born turkish author tries to convey the islamic mystical tradition- Sufism through two modern people。 Aziz zahara who turned into sufism and Ella Rubinstein an american woman。Ella is an unhappy woman troubled by the affairs of her husband and deprived of true love。 She has a literature background but couldn't establish a firm career because of the hurdles of being a homemaker。 Ella gets to know about Aziz as a part of her job as an editor for 'Forty rules of love' written by Elif shafak a french born turkish author tries to convey the islamic mystical tradition- Sufism through two modern people。 Aziz zahara who turned into sufism and Ella Rubinstein an american woman。Ella is an unhappy woman troubled by the affairs of her husband and deprived of true love。 She has a literature background but couldn't establish a firm career because of the hurdles of being a homemaker。 Ella gets to know about Aziz as a part of her job as an editor for reviewing his book。 The book revolves around the two true true companions and also known as the pillars of sufism; Jalaludhin Rumi and Shamz of Tabriz。 Their friendship is indeed an incredible one。 Shamz spreads light in the life of Rumi and guides him from therein。 He teaches him to abstain from all the worldly affairs and thus perceiving only the love for God through his great forty rules。 It is also Shamz who transforms him from the great scholar to a mystic poet hidden inside Rumi。 The light of this beautiful friendship reflects its light upon Ella and thus paving way toward her friendship with Aziz。 The book talks through different perspectives, sometimes through Shamz,Rumi or even through the peasant and the prostitute。We can't judge another person through our own eyes only。 Neither every person's life is same nor the circumstances that made them what they are today。 So to be kind, to understand others and only reflect love should be the virtues of our life。 Indeed this book fills our soul with words that are delicate yet powerful enough to echo through our vacant hearts。 As a believer of Islam, even though I do not agree to sufism and how they romanticize everything, yet this book is filled with a number of life lessons one should know and it is a masterpiece! 。。。more

It reads like a book written to sell in the Western world and looking at how popular this book is, I'd say the plan worked just right。 It is superficial book, written quite conveniently taking too much creative liberty。 If you think this book will tell you anything about Rumi, mysticism, spiritualism, Sufism then don't read it。 The parallel plot in the book about Ella & Aziz was a cliché- almost script of a Hollywood romantic movie。 The plot about Rumi and Shams has a great built up but very lit It reads like a book written to sell in the Western world and looking at how popular this book is, I'd say the plan worked just right。 It is superficial book, written quite conveniently taking too much creative liberty。 If you think this book will tell you anything about Rumi, mysticism, spiritualism, Sufism then don't read it。 The parallel plot in the book about Ella & Aziz was a cliché- almost script of a Hollywood romantic movie。 The plot about Rumi and Shams has a great built up but very little substance to it。 Its not a terrible book though, it has its high points too-The narrative style I liked very much, how each chapter is from a different POV。 There are the 40 rules of love in the book, which even though did not come through to me personally, but many people seem to have connected to them a lot。 And if nothing else, the book did inspire some interest in me to read more on Sufism and Rumi。 Also to the book's credit it was a very easy read。 Even though it wasn't too interesting, it wasn't a drag either。 That is a compliment, given how long the book is。 Fun fact- there is an uncanny resemblance to the main plot of Shams & Rumi with the plot and treatment of Satya & Bhikumatre (2 protagonists from one the greatest Indian movie- Satya)。 In both the cases Rumi/Bhiku are the lead protagonists, but in the story we see/read Satya/Shams are the driving force of the narrative。 I once heard RGV say that with Satya he wanted to bring Howard Roark (from The Fountainhead) to the underworld。 I wonder if he knows about this resemblance。 。。。more

When the book itself teaches you the religion of love, how can you not love it?The Forty Rules of Love has a story within a story。 Ella is a forty year old married woman with three children。 She has everything she could ever want but soon realizes how unhappy she is when she starts reading a manuscript which makes her question her life。 The tale in the manuscript follows the lives of two souls, Rumi and Shams as they become spiritual companions even when the world turns against them。Intrigue When the book itself teaches you the religion of love, how can you not love it?The Forty Rules of Love has a story within a story。 Ella is a forty year old married woman with three children。 She has everything she could ever want but soon realizes how unhappy she is when she starts reading a manuscript which makes her question her life。 The tale in the manuscript follows the lives of two souls, Rumi and Shams as they become spiritual companions even when the world turns against them。Intrigued by the writing, Ella contacts the author, Aziz and soon they are exchanging mails and talking over the phone, connecting with each other across the world。 Will this turn into somerhing more? Will she find love again? Even if she does, will it last? As Shams says in the book - "But the old maxim still applies: Where there is love, there is bound to be heartbreak。"There are so many amazing things that I can write from this book, so many brilliant quotes that it's hard to select。 All of the forty rules are so carefully woven, each and every one resonating directly with your heart。 I completely loved the book and recommend it to everyone。 I'm so glad I didn't miss out on this experience and don't want anyone else to either。 So if you haven't yet read this book, pick it up now。 You'll not regret it。 Ever。 。。。more

。。more

I quite enjoyed the book to begin with, and the short chapters made it quick to read。 However, I got a bit bored part way through and didn't really find the section in the present particularly believable or satisfying。 There were a lot of characters introduced in the past story and I felt like they didn't get fleshed out very well so that I didn't really care about any of them or find them very engaging。 I quite enjoyed the book to begin with, and the short chapters made it quick to read。 However, I got a bit bored part way through and didn't really find the section in the present particularly believable or satisfying。 There were a lot of characters introduced in the past story and I felt like they didn't get fleshed out very well so that I didn't really care about any of them or find them very engaging。 。。。more
